Police nab 12 suspected cultists recover 138 AK 47 rifles

Operatives of State Anti-cult Unit (SACU) of Delta State Police Command, yesterday, arrested no fewer than 12 suspected cultists at different locations in Ugwashu-Uku, Aniocha South Council of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, while confirming the incident, said following the cult-related clash in Ogwashi-Uku, three suspects were arrested on June 6, 2021.

He said the Commander, SACU, who acted on intelligence, arrested another cult group who were converging somewhere in Ogwashi-Uku the following day at about 11pm.

According to him, the operatives raided their hideout at Ogwashi-Uku as they were holding meeting and arrested one Collins Okonji and eight other suspected cultists.

The Police spokesman revealed that English pump action gun, one double barrel cut-to-size gun, one battle-axe and two live cartridges were recovered from them while investigation is ongoing in the matter.

Edafe also said on June 11, 2021 at about 4:30pm, while Eagle-net special squad team were on routine patrol/stop and search along Ughelli-Port Harcourt road, they intercepted a Mazda 626 saloon car, dark green in colour with Reg. No. UGH 722 AA with six occupants – two males and four females.

He stated that they were asked to come down from the vehicle for search, but in the process of searching a sack containing rice, a man whose name is not yet known among the occupants, fled into a nearby stream and later into the forest.

Other passengers identified the sack as belonging to the man, and when search was conducted, 138 rounds of AK47 live ammunitions, one AK47 magazine, one Baretta pistol magazine and a knife was recovered from the sack.

Edafe said: “Preliminary investigation revealed that the occupants are all passengers that boarded the cab from Eleyele PHC to Ughelli.
