The Comptroller-General of Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Muhammad Babandede has pledged to rid Nigeria’s border communities of illegal migrants as well as threats to insecurity.

Babandede, who made the declaration at Government House Katsina when he visited Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari, also disclosed that his agency has illegal immigrants from Niger and Nigeria who use the borders to perpetuate their unlawful transactions.

He further warned officers and men in his command that those found aiding illegal migrants would face stiffer punishments.

He said: ”It is not going to be business as usual when immigrants overstayed their time limit of 90 days in Nigeria without proper documentation. Henceforth, my men would deal with them decisively by prosecuting them accordingly.

”NIS is engaging traditional institutions in the state to help since they are closer to people at the grassroots.

The Comptroller-General also sympathised with the government and people of Katsina State over the wanton killings by bandits.

Governor Masari said Katsina citizens are living in a very peculiar situation and that the challenges before the Comptroller of Immigration is the issue of how to identify someone from Niger and somebody from the neighbouring communities of Katsina State.

He said: ”It is very difficult, but you have taken the right step by involving the traditional rulers. I think they have much more role to play in this and surely, it will help in identifying those who have overstayed in the country.”
