Britney Spears offered an inscrutable comment on her breathlessly covered, fast-developing conservatorship battle Wednesday night, by posting a nude bathroom selfie.
Eschewing her usual wordy posting style, Spears, 39, elected to caption the back-to-the-camera shot with only a ballet slipper emoji. Two of the singer’s tattoos, the small fairy at the base of her spine and the Kabbalah symbol at the nape of her neck, are seemingly absent from the pic — maybe she’s taking a page from Pete Davidson’s book?
A few comments — picking up on the tattoo thing — cast doubts that the picture even depicts Spears, though journalist D. Hunter Schwarz notched Page Six’s personal favorite of the comments, writing pithily, “Britney’s back.” Beyond that, the perennial cry of “Free Britney” was the most popular
The ongoing battle over Spears’ conservatorship — in place since 2008, after her post-divorce breakdown — has ramped up drastically since the singer’s first address to the court on June 23.
On Wednesday, her mother, Lynne Spears, asked in a petition obtained by Page Six that the court “listen to the wishes of her daughter” — namely by allowing her to “hire her own private legal counsel” for the first time in over 13 years.
That development followed the requests to resign filed by both Spears’ court-appointed attorney since 2008, Samuel D. Ingham III, and Loeb & Loeb LLP, the law firm hired to assist him. Spears’ longtime manager, Larry Rudolph, also quit Monday, saying his “professional services are no longer needed” as Britney intends to “officially retire,” a claim that hasn’t been addressed by the singer.
Spears described the conservatorship as “abusive” in June. “It’s my wish and my dream for all of this to end,” she told Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny.
