Boko Haram insurgents on Sunday, April 25, attacked Mainok community in Borno state.

Mainok which is the headquarters of the Kaga Local Government Area is located on the Maiduguri – Damaturu Highway and is 55 kilometres away from Maiduguri, the state capital.

Eyewitnesses told Daily Trust that houses were set on fire by the insurgents who also broke into shops. It was also learnt that the insurgents were seen in a convoy of between 15 and 20 vehicles near Mainok town on Sunday afternoon.

The Nation reported that because of the attack, the highway was closed for about four hours, causing heavy traffic from both sides of Maiduguri and Damaturu. Many commuters were almost caught breaking their fast in the gridlock before the road was reopened.

Some of the drivers who passed through Mainok from Maiduguri told The Nation correspondent that parts of the military base and a police station in the town were burnt during the attack.

One of the drivers said;

“We noticed that the some part of the military base was still burning because I could see some heavy smoke still coming from the camp. The police station was also burnt.”
